So a couple of Saturdays ago, 12 of my closest friends in dental school and I decided that we would seek to defend our Race to Any Place '09 title, and once again contribute to the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society here in Pittsburgh.
What is a Race To Any Place you may ask?
It is a stationary bike race. Sounds strange doesn't it? Racing on stationary bikes? Isn't that the antithesis of racing? Don't you need to go somewhere to have it be a race?
My answer is a resounding NO!
With mileage as our guide, we put ourselves through two 15-minute sessions each of grueling madness to be crowned the open division champions. (Rider A for 15 min, then Rider B for 15 minutes....and so on...and then we start the cycle (haha) all over again.)
Last year, in just over 6 hours, we raced over 131 miles. This year, I am happy to triumphantly proclaim, we went 135 miles, and in the process, were declared champions once again. Not only did we win the open division, but we also beat the ROTC Marines of Carnegie Mellon. I don't know whether to be scared for our country at their defeat, or be excited that somehow we were more fit. In any case, despite our daily grind of dental school, we are stationary-bike strong.
One final note before your mouths gape open at the awesomeness of our crew...yes we are all (besides those for whom it is physically impossible) sporting 'staches. Why? WHY NOT!?!?! (Actually, we had a Mustachio Bashio contest at school 2 days prior, and we just decided to keep them.)
So enjoy the pics, and remember that you too can BIKESTRONG (stationary).
